STREP THROAT

Anybody can get sore throat
(also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis), but it's most common in school-age kids and teens. It is more widespread during the school year when hundreds of teens are in one building, laughing, yelling, sneezing, and coughing.

The bacteria that cause strep throat tend to hang out in the nose and throat, so normal activities like sneezing, coughing, or shaking hands can easily scatter the strep infection to other people. You also can get it by touching school books, tables, or other surfaces that an infected person handles. That's why it's so important to wash your hands as often as possible - good hygiene can lessen your chances of getting contagious diseases like strep throat.

"Strep throat is more serious than the other 85% of sore throats because, if not treated with antibiotics, it sometimes can cause more serious pus-forming infections," says Frederick Meier, MD, a pathologist. In fact, the scientific name for the strep that causes sore throats is pyogenes, or pus-maker. Group A streptococci also produce toxins that can cause circulatory collapse (shock) in streptococcal toxic shock syndrome or fever and a rash in scarlet fever.

Timely antibiotic treatment can dramatically decrease a child's chance of developing rheumatic fever and many of the other possible complications of a strep infection. To determine whether a sore throat is caused by strep, a pediatrician can use either a rapid  strep test ing device or throat culture can be performed. Some parents and schools have use a at home strep test to be proactive and avoid the use on unecesary antibiotics when results on a rapid strep test are negative.
